Announcements:

Dear Democratic Friends,

Since our very successful presidential election, we've stirred up a hornet's nest and we can expect to be challenged at every level with tough campaigns in the next few years. It's time to roll up our sleeves and show our metal. With the start-up of the municipal election season and changes in organizational leadership, there are many activities in the planning stages.

The District Conventions were held May 16. Congratulations to Dennis Mitchell, who was elected Third Vice Chair for the First Congressional District, and also to Rich Elkins, who was elected secretary for the Thrid Congressional District! We're pleased to be represented by two of Pitt County's best. The Districts elected a full slate of new officers who will lead us through the next two exciting and challenging years. Thanks to all of you who made the extra effort to attend.

The next important meeting on our agenda is the Pitt County Democratic Executive Committee, which will meet on June 6, 2009, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at 153 Fulford Building, Pitt Community College. One purpose of this meeting is to nominate a replacement for the Honorable Judy Tart, Register of Deeds, who will retire effective June 1. The nominee will be appointed by the county commissioners and will serve the remainder of the unexpired term. The second is to nominate three persons for appointment to the Board of Elections. David Conradt and Lillian Outterbridge are currently serving terms that will expire June 30. Two of the the three will be recommended by the State Chair and appointed by the State Board of Elections. At this meeting, we will also begin outlining plans to build on our precinct organizations to increase participation in party educational and social activities. Although only the elected members of the executive committee may vote, all meetings of the party are open to all registered Democrats and you are invited to attend.

Democratic Women are on the move! New officers, headed by new president Ann Huggins, have already set June 16 for a membership reception for all women Democrats. The event will be held at the home of Kathy Taft. Membership dues are still an affordable $10 and offer a network of socially and politically active women who get things done. And by the way, guys, you too can become a member. I'm looking forward to seeing you there.

All politics are local and that is particularly true this year when municipal elections to select mayors and our city/town representatives in most municipalities will be held on November 3. While these are non-partisan races and we want both Democrats and Republicans to vote for the candidates we support, it is still very important to push a strong, grass-roots effort to elect or re-elect people who have represented us well. The Democratic affiliated elected officials are members of our Executive Committee and play significant roles in our ongoing party efforts and in making policy that impacts us all. Consider throwing your own hat in the ring or getting actively involved with one of the many campaigns. Your support and efforts are needed and will be appreciated.

Sincerely,

Betsy Leech, Chair
