What districts do I vote for?

An important step in being an informed voter is to find out what the districts are where you live and are registered. The ballot races in which you vote may be different than other people who vote in the same precinct as you, or even someone who lives very close to you.

The easiest, and most accurate way to determine your precinct (where you vote) and electoral districts is to check your registration directly with the State Board of Elections website. By simply entering your first and last names, your date of birth, and selecting the county where you are registered, you can see your voter registration information, confirm you are registered at the correct address, see your voting history (which elections you voted in, not who you voted for), and find your precinct. Clicking on "My Districts" will then bring up all of the various districts which affect the races for which you vote. You can also click another link to pull up a road map showing the location where you vote. During a period before each election you can even pull up a sample ballot to view the races and candidates for each race customized to your districts.

It is also a good idea to check your registration if you have moved and don't remember whether or not you updated your registration, or if you have gone for several elections without voting. Missing several elections or having election mail returned as undeliverable could cause your registration to be marked as "inactive" and causing problems when you try to vote.

Check your registration and districts at the State Board of Elections.

What if I am not registered?

If you are not registered to vote, you must do so in order to vote. Registering requires completing a simple form. You can register to vote at the County Board of Elections (201 E. 2nd Street, Downtown Greenville), at any Public Library, at the Drivers License Office (change your voter registration address when you get a new drivers license), at numerous social service agencies, or at either the Pitt County Elections Headquarters (3400 S. Memorial Drive, Greenville) or the Obama for America Regional Office (414 S. Evans Street, downtown Greenville). You are not required to register as a Democrat to register to vote with us, but we hope that you will!

You can call the County Board of Elections (252-902-3300) to learn more locations where you can register to vote. You may also pick up a voter registration form at any of the locations and submit it to the County Board of Elections by mail. Lastly, you can complete a voter registration form online which you can then print and mail to the County Board of Elections.

In order to vote on Election Day, you must register at least 25 days before the election. (Deadline for the November 4th election is 5pm on Friday, October 10th.) If you miss the registration deadline, you still have the option to participate in One-Stop Voting, but you must register and vote at the One-Stop location, you cannot vote at your precinct on Election Day.

The following are the qualifications to register to vote in North Carolina from the State Board of Elections website:

  • You must be a US Citizen.
  • You must be 18 by the next General Election day.
  • You must be a NC resident and have lived at your residence for at least 30 days preceding the General Election.
  • If you have previously been convicted of a felony, you must have completed all parts of your sentence, including probation and parole, and then your citizenship rights are automatically restored and your are permitted to register and vote.
If you are not currently registered and want to determine the districts where you live, the Pitt County Board of Elections has maps available online showing the various districts within the county, and with some more detailed maps for the Greenville area. You can also call the Board of Elections (252-902-3300) with representation questions. Other web resources to determine your districts exist online, but will not include districts for local government races.

You can also search for Polling Place assignments by address at the State Board of Elections website without being registered.
